Greece is a country that has made considerable progress in the last decade in environmental policy issues, but it is widely acceptable that there is still much effort to be invested in improving the present situation and establishing a strategy in SWM. AUTH is one of the main academic institutions of the country, the largest in numbers and has been a pioneer in promoting environmental education und research in Greece, represented presently by its Environmental Council. LHTEE is actively involved in the Environmental Council and a large number of activities in the environmental research , one of which is SWM, including planning waste management facilities. It is therefore considered a suitable link between research and praxis and has the necessary expertise to carry out the work assigned in the project. The experience of the AUTH Research Committee and LHTEE in managing projects also ensures the smooth and efficient management of the project. Finally, there is a close co-operation with a number of municipalities in the region of Central Macedonia, so that there is an existing platform of communication for the dissemination and exploitation of results in environmental authorities.
